Squirrel at local park

While at Secret Woods Nature Center I saw this willing subject who apparently thought I had food for him. He did not seem like he wanted to go away - just kept hanging around and wagging his tail. At least he gave me a chance to take about 15 shots. Here is the best image:

Capturing details with the Canon 7D

I set out to capture an image with some intricate design to see how the camera handles details. I used my white sneaker as the subject. The camera was placed on a tripod and the 2 seconds self-timer was used to get the camera as steady as possible.

I attached my 70-200mm f/4L lens and set it at 168mm. I set the camera to Av mode and chose aperture f/10. The camera automatically selected 1/320 sec and ISO 250. The image was shot in RAW at 5184x3456 pixels.

The image to the right is just a cross section of the sneaker and almost 100 % crop.

Cropping from large RAW file

One thing I like about the 7D is the large file size. When I take photos of birds I use my Canon 70-200mm f/4L lens. Now it would be much better if I had a 400mm or 500mm lens for bird photography.

For now I use the 200mm setting on my zoom lens and crop as best I can. Here is a result of cropping from a large file. I took this photograph of an eastern meadowlark at Tamiami-Kendall Executive Airport in West Kendall. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Checking detail and sharpness

I am still getting use to this new toy. Today I wanted to check how well the camera renders details. I fitted the camera with my 70-200mm f/4 L lens set at 200mm.

I sprayed water on a tree in the backyard and was able to capture images like this one.

It was a bit windy so the leaf was moving a little and because it was late in the afternoon I could not get a fast shutter speed at ISO 100.

First set of photos taken my the EOS 7D

This photo of a great blue heron was taken at Plantation Preserve Park. I was a very overcast morning but with a little help from by flash I was able to get this "acceptable" image.

Woodpeckers at Plantation Preserve

I saw these wookpeckers at Plantation Preserve early Friday morning. The lighting was poor on a overcast day. My flash (580 EXII) helped say the morning.
